In 1982 I took a two-year course in professional animation at the Secondo Bignardi studio in Modena. I then stepped into the world of animation at GLM (also in Modena) where, in the beginning of the 80s, the production of the first season of La Pimpa by Altan and La Linea by Cavandoli was beginning. I won a number of awards as the author of short films: the Bit Movie at Riccione, the Jazz Bit at the Turku Festival in Finland in 1994, and the Foreign Animation Silver Award at the 13th Shanghai Television Festival, for a promotional short on the Emilia-Romagna region in 2006. During the past ten years, I have worn many hats as a director, producer and author of a number of animated clips for Italian musical groups, including Le luci della centrale Elettrica, Tre allegri ragazzi morti, Colapesce, Punkreas, 24 grana, Prozac+, The Zen Circus, Luca d’Alberto, and many others. More recently I worked on advertising spots for different brands and products, including Barilla, Mulino Bianco, Chicco, Ikea (Germany), Istat, Pomellato and Nestlé. I also created a series of spots for the Rai 3 broadcast Viva la Crisi. Several of my short films like Djuma, Senza Testa, For Pina and Venditori ambulanti, are in the running for awards or being shown in the line-ups of some of the biggest international animation festivals, including Annecy, Zagreb, New York, Melbourne, Amsterdam, Tallin and Istanbul.

After graduating from the Fine Arts Academy in Naples, Donato attended the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia (CSC school in Turin, see pp. 108-109), where he specialized in mixing traditional and experimental animation techniques to live action. Since then he has worked on many projects among which videoclips, shorts and TV commercials. His videos have been selected in film festivals all around the world (Annecy, Anima Mundi in Brazil, Hiroshima,…) and shared on the most popular web blogs (stashmedia.tv, creativeapplications. net, motiongraphics.nu, wired. com, Vimeo staff picks and hundreds more). They currently total over a million views. The Cinemathéque Québecoise screened Videogioco among the 50 short films which «changed the history of animation». In 2009, the French magazine «Les cahiers du cinéma» also reported on Videogioco; in 2013 the Canal+ show «Oeil de links» devoted a programme on his work, and in 2014 his video Grotesque Photobooth was selected by Saatchi & Saatchi for their New Directors Showcase at the Cannes International Festival of Creativity. His videos are currently distributed by the French company Autour de minuit. He is used to working freelance with the most creative advertising agencies and music labels in Italy (Afterhours, Subsonica, Verdena, Francesco de Gregori, Ferrari, Samsung,…). His 2015 shortfilm Journal animé was produced by Canal+ for the collection «Dessine toujours». Journal animé was nominated in November 2016 for an animation Oscar and in 2017 for the Cesar awards.
