DESCRIPTION:FRÉQUENCES ANIMÉES: WORKSHOP SONS ET IMAGES ANIMÉS\n Réservation obligatoire à l’adresse: atelier@animatou.com \n\nCet atelier de création artistique sur trois jours est proposé par Andrea Martignoni\, l’un des réalisateurs majeurs de trames sonores en Italie. Organisé en collaboration avec le centre d’accueil pour personnes migrantes de la Roseraie\, ce workshop s’adresse à toute personne intéressée à s’essayer à l’animation. Le film réalisé pendant ces trois jours sera diffusé lors de la rencontre et discussion autour des questions de la migration et de l’intégration à l’Auditorium du MEG samedi 14 octobre entre 16h et 17h30. \nThis three-day artistic creation workshop is led by Andrea Martignoni\, a major soundtrack director in Italy. Organized in collaboration with the Roseraie welcome centre for migrant persons\, this workshop is for anyone interested in trying their hand at animation. The film produced in those three days will be shown during the open discussion on Friday 14th October\, between 4 and 5.30 pm.

Le premier programme illustre la période qui démarre au début des années 60 et s’achève à la fin des années 80\, se prolongeant même au tout début des années 90. Nous y croiserons quelques grands noms du court-métrage d’animation italien\, depuis les noms connus dans le monde entier de Bruno Bozzetto et du couple d’artistes Gianini et Luzzati jusqu’à des noms moins célèbres mais pas moins intéressants comme Manfredo Manfredi et Stelio Passacantando\, en passant par les Minifilms\, petits bijoux créés à partir de 1966 par Paul Campani. Paul Campani\, dont la société de production Paul Film sise à Modène fut une véritable pépinière d’artistes à l’incroyable talent créatif\, au sommet de leur carrière dans la production de publicité d’auteur\, aussi bien pour le cinéma que pour la télévision\, et notamment pour le format publicitaire typiquement italien du Carosello – émission de début de soirée qui sera diffusée de la fin des années 1950 à la fin des années 1970\, et qui avec des spots publicitaires de la même période fait l’objet de la seconde rétrospective. Quant au programme le plus récent\, il concerne l’animation italienne de ces dix dernières années\, dont le niveau de qualité n’a rien à envier aux âges d’or des décennies précédentes. \n  \nINTRODUCTION by Andrea Martignoni\, curator \nPutting together three screenings for Animatou on three different facets and periods of Italian animation proved to be a thoroughly interesting exercise. The first programme canvasses the period from the beginning of the 1960s to the end of the 1980s\, stretching into the early 1990s. In this line-up\, we encounter some of the great names of Italian animated short films – from renowned\, internationally known figures like Bruno Bozzetto and the duo Gianini and Luzzati\, to lesser known\, but not less interesting directors like Manfredo Manfredi and Stelio Passacantando\, not to mention works like Minifilms\, little jewels first created by Paul Campani in 1966. Paul Campani’s production company Paul Film in Modena was a veritable breeding ground of incredible creative talent\, with artists at the height of their careers in the creation of «auteur» commercials for television and the big screen. One such example is the typically Italian advertising format of Carosello\, an evening show that was broadcast from the end of the 1950s until the end of the 1970s. Carosello and other TV ads from the same period make up the programme of the second screening. The third screening showcases more recent Italian animated films from the last ten years\, whose level of quality gives Italy’s modern era of filmmaking no reason to envy the golden ages of decades past. \n\nSignor Rossi est le personnage le plus caractéristique de l’animation de Bruno Bozzetto et de sa vision critique de l’Italie du boom économique de l’après-guerre. Il signor Rossi compera l’automobile est peut-être le meilleur exemple de cette veine sarcastique\, tandis que Una vita in scatola dénonce lui aussi l’aliénation de la vie moderne\, mais d’un autre point de vue. Libérés de toute finalité publicitaire et inspirés des transformations culturelles propres aux années 1960\, Paul Campani et Massimino Garnier créent la série des Minifilms\, des courts-métrages animés d’une minute de durée\, à l’ironie grotesque\, capables de résumer toutes les caractéristiques et défauts de l’homme contemporain. Avec Pulcinella\, Gianini et Luzzati réalisent encore un de leurs chefs-d’oeuvre universels avec lesquels ils rendent hommage à la musique de Gioacchino Rossini. Plus difficile d’accès\, le cinéma de Manfredo Manfredi\, considéré par beaucoup comme le chef de file de la peinture animée qui se développera par la suite au cours des années 1990 et 2000. Stelio Passacantando réalise Il Generale all’inferno\, adapté d’un poème de Pablo Neruda et réalisé avec des dessins violents et crus en noir et blanc\, qui dénonce les horreurs de la guerre dans l’Espagne franquiste. Ursula Ferrara\, à l’époque une promesse de l’animation italienne (et qui a fait ses preuves depuis)\, réalise un merveilleux plan-séquence en noir et blanc dans Come persone. \n  \nSignor Rossi is the character that most encapsulates Bruno Bozzetto’s animation style and critical regard on the Italy of the post-war economic boom. Il signor Rossi compera l’automobile (Mr. Rossi Buys a Car) is perhaps the best illustration of Bozzetto’s sarcastic streak\, while Una vita in scatola (Life in a Box) denounces the alienation of modern life from a different perspective. Free from advertising constraints and inspired by the cultural transformations taking place in the 1960s\, Paul Campani and Massimino Garnier created the series Minifilms\, one-minute animated shorts of grotesque humour able to summarize all the characteristics and faults of modern man. With Pulcinella\, Gianini and Luzzati produced another universal chef-d’oeuvre that paid homage to the music of Gioacchino Rossini. More difficult to access were the films of Manfredo Manfredi\, considered by many as the leader of animated painting\, a technique that would develop over the course of the 1990s and 2000s. Stelio Passacantando directed Il Generale all’inferno\, adapted from a poem by Pablo Neruda and composed of violent\, raw drawings in black and white denouncing the horrors of the war in Franco’s Spain. Entre 1942 et 1943\, tout jeune encore\, il participe comme scénographe au long-métrage d’animation La Rosa di Bagdad. En 1954\, il fonde la société de production Paul Film. Avec l’aide du scénariste Max Massimino Garnier et d’une équipe qui comptera jusqu’à 80 personnes\, il y réalisera une abondante production de spots publicitaires d’animation aussi bien pour le cinéma que pour le créneau publicitaire Carosello à la télévision\, tout juste créé à l’époque. C’est donc chez Paul Film que naîtront nombre des icônes publicitaires télévisées du boom économique italien\, comme le moustachu de la cafetière Bialetti\, le Mexicain Miguel des biscuits Talmone\, Angelino pour la lessive Trim\, Fido Bau pour les produits Roberts\, Toto et Tata pour Motta\, Svanitella pour la cire Liù et Pupa et Bob-Bob pour l’électroménager Zoppas. Si pendant les années 1960 et le début des années 1970\, Paul Film est l’une des plus importantes sociétés de production italiennes et européennes\, la fin de l’émission Carosello en 1977 en signera brusquement le terme et le démantèlement. Ce sera aussi le début d’une nouvelle période créatrice\, plus intime\, pour Paul Campani\, qui se concentrera davantage sur la peinture et la sculpture. \nPaolo (Paul) Campani (Modena\, 1923–1991) debuted his work at the age of 16 when he published his comic strip L’occhio di Shiva in the magazine Albi dell’Intrepido. Between 1942 and 1943\, still very young\, he was a set designer for the feature-length animation La Rosa di Bagdad. In 1954\, he founded the Paul Film production company. Il a étudié la musique et la géographie à l’Université de Bologne. En 1996\, il obtient une bourse de recherche du gouvernement canadien pour approfondir ses études à la Cinémathèque québécoise. Comme musicien\, il a participé à plusieurs projets d’artistes internationaux comme Fred Frith\, Jon Rose\, Lawrence D. Butch Morris\, Dominique Lentin et le collectif Laboratorio di Musica e Immagine. Avec la Compagnia d’Arte Drummatica\, il collabore à des projets de ciné-concerts consacrés à la sonorisation de films d’animation. Il a créé les trames sonores de nombreux courts-métrages animés (entre autres de Saul Saguatti\, Blu\, Pierre Hébert\, Petra Zlonoga\, Igor Pramatarov\, Roberto Catani\, Virginia Mori\, Ivan Bogdanov\, Soetkin Verstegen) et son travail a été distingué par plusieurs prix. En collaboration avec divers festivals internationaux\, il a conduit des masterclass\, des ateliers\, des conférences en lien avec l’animation et la bande sonore et a enseigné l’histoire de l’animation aux Beaux- Arts de Palerme et à l’Université de Milan. Il prépare actuellement son premier film d’animation avec la réalisatrice Maria Steinmetz. Andrea supervisera également un atelier d’une semaine en novembre 2017 à la HEAD-Genève avec les étudiant-e-s de la filière communication en vue de la création des bandes annonces du Festival Animatou 2018. \nAndrea Martignoni was born in 1961 and is an Italian musician\, sound designer and film historian. He studied music and geography at the University of Bologna. In 1996\, he received a research award from the Canadian government to further his studies at the Cinémathèque québécoise. As a musician\, he has participated\nin numerous projects with international artists such as Fred Frith\, Jon Rose\, Lawrence D. Butch Morris\, Dominique Lentin and the group Laboratorio di Musica e Immagine. With the Compagnia d’Arte Drummatica\, he works on film concert projects\, producing live soundtracks for animated films. He has composed the soundtrack for many animated shorts\, including films by Saul Saguatti\, Blu\, Pierre Hébert\, Petra Zlonoga\, Igor Pramatarov\, Roberto Catani\, Virginia Mori\, Ivan Bogdanov\, and Soetkin Verstegen\, and has received numerous awards for his work. At international festivals\, he has led master classes\, workshops and conferences on animation and soundtracks. He has also taught the history of animation at the Fine Arts Academy of Palermo and at the University of Milan. He is currently working on his first animated film with director Maria Steinmetz. Andrea will also supervise a one week workshop in November 2017 at HEAD-Genève with the students of Visual Communication Department in order to create the 2018 Animatou trailers.

DESCRIPTION:12 COURTS-MÉTRAGES – 70’\nCarte blanche à l’école CSC ANIMAZIONE\nCentro Sperimentale di Cinematografia – Piemonte \nProgramme en italien \n\nL’école nationale de cinéma Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia (CSC) est fondée à Rome en 1935 sous le nom de Ecole Nationale du Film. Elle se trouve\, encore aujourd’hui\, sous l’égide du Ministère de la Culture. Le programme de cours d’animation\, qui s’étend sur trois ans\, est créé en 2001 et basé à Turin\, avec la collaboration et le soutien du Gouvernement de la Région Piémont. Depuis\, CSC Animazione est devenu un point de convergence pour tous les étudiants italiens qui s’intéressent à l’animation dans ses applications les plus variées\, tant comme moyen d’expression personnelle que dans une optique de carrière professionnelle. Le but du programme est de développer les compétences et outils nécessaires au développement du talent de créateurs\, artistes ou professionnels ayant déjà des bases techniques et artistiques dans les domaines de la pré-production et de la production de films d’animation. L’Ecole attache une importance particulière à l’expression artistique et à l’utilisation de l’animation comme outil de communication\, incluant les techniques les plus diverses. L’enseignement\, que ce soit à travers les cours en amphithéâtre\, les ateliers ou les séminaires\, est dispensé par des artistes et professionnels de l’industrie de tous horizons. Les films d’étudiants de la CSC sont régulièrement sélectionnés pour participer à des festivals d’animation de renommée mondiale comme Annecy\, Zagreb\, Stuttgart\, Hiroshima\, Lisbonne\, Ljubliana\, et\, en Italie\, le Festival Giffoni\, le Future Film Festival de Bologne\, le View Festival de Turin\, Cartoons on the Bay à Venezia\, Imaginaria Bari\, le Festival du court-métrage indépendant de Rome\, etc. \nThe Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia-National Film School was established in 1935 in Rome as the National Film School. It depends on the Ministry of Culture. Its three-year animation film course was established in Turin in 2001\, in agreement and with the support of the Government of the Piedmont Region. Since then\, CSC Animazione has been an important point of convergence in Italy for students who look at animation\, in its variety of application\, as their mean of expression and their artistic and professional career. The objective of the course is to train creators\, artists and professionals who possess a general knowledge and understanding of the animation film development and production process\, and who have artistic and technical skills in the main pre-production and production areas of animation. Teaching aims at the development of each student’s creative talent and of his/her artistic\, technical and teamwork abilities. Great emphasis is given to animation as a tool for artistic expression and communication\, as well as a way to interweave different languages and techniques. Tuition\, courses\, lectures and workshops are given by industry professionals and artists from Italy and abroad. Student films are regularly selected at Festivals\, among them the International festival of animation of Annecy\, Zagreb\, Stuttgart\, Hiroshima\, Lisbon\, Ljubliana\, and\, in Italy\, Giffoni Film Festival\, Future Film Festival Bologna\, View Festival Torino\, Cartoons on the Bay Venezia\, Imaginaria Bari\, Rome Independent Short Film Festival\, etc. \n  \nLes 12 courts-métrages de ce programme sont une sélection de films de diplôme réalisés entre 2008 et 2016 par des élèves de l’école CSC de Turin. \nThis programme is a selection of 12 graduation films made between 2008 and 2016 by students of the CSC school in Torino.

DESCRIPTION:8 COURTS-MÉTRAGES – 68’\nFestival Animaphix\, Sicile \nProgramme en italien \n\nLe Festival international du film d’animation ANIMAPHIX offre une plateforme riche en initiatives et en activitiés liées à la promotion et la distribution de films d’animation\, avec la volonté de mettre en lumière de magnifiques films tout en privilégiant le cinéma d’auteurs indépendants. Le festival présente des films en compétition et hors compétition\, proposant d’une part des films aux techniques d’animation traditionnelles\, mais également des films plus expérimentaux\, avec pour résultat un large éventail du monde de l’animation contemporaine. D’autres sections sont consacrés aux programmes de rétrospectives\, ou aux rencontres avec les réalisateurs favorisant une approche plus en profondeur du cinéma d’animation. Ainsi\, le programme Soundscapes explore les paysages sonores\, tandis que History of Animation parcourt l’histoire de l’animation internationale; Queer Animation approche les thèmes de l’identité et des différentes orientations sexuelles\, tandis que Future est consacré exclusivement aux talents émergents. Chaque année le festival propose aussi des laboratoires d’images\, des programmes enfants ainsi que des workshops pour professionnels en devenir. The festival\, oriented toward the independent world of authorial animation\, is structured in different sections with competitive and non competitive programmes. The competitive programme explores not only the more traditional productions\, but also the technological experimentations\, offering\, therefore\, a wide overview of the various ramifications of the animation sector. En mettant en avant la notion d’ouverture sur d’autres cultures et en exposant les fruits des\néchanges qui ont résulté du métissage italo-suisse à Genève et ailleurs\, les intervenant-e-s aideront à mieux comprendre les enjeux des mouvements migratoires de notre époque. By focusing on the concept of openness to other cultures\, and exposing the fruitful exchanges that resulted from Italian-Swiss mixing in Geneva and elsewhere\, the speakers will lead us to better understand the stakes of the migratory movements of our time. Illustrators\, directors\, artisans\, and people actively involved in the area of migrant integration will participate in this event.
