LE CHOIX DE | THE PICK OF:

Claude Barras
L’AIR DE RIEN | CÉCILE MILAZZO | France | 2011 | 3’30’’

“ L’air de rien really inspired me graphically and narratively when I saw it at its release in 2011. I was excited by the film’s universe, and hired the filmmaker as head painter for my first feature-length film, Ma vie de courgette, so that her artistic talent could be put to good use on my first feature film.”

Elie Chapuis
38° 39°C | KANGMIN KIM | Etats-Unis | 7’51’’ | 2011

“ 38°-39°C is an immersion into the parallel world of public baths and the protagonist’s daydream. The film takes us into an unrelenting visual journey of bewildering, intermingling animation techniques which ingeniously conjure up childhood memories and strong sensations.”

Jossie Malis

“ The first time I saw this amazing short by Svankmajer, on an old VHS around the middle of the 90s, I got goosebumps. It turned out to be one of those defining moments when you decide what you’re going to do with your life.”

Pierre-Luc Granjon
OLD FANGS | ADRIEN MERIGEAU & ALAN HOLLY | France | 2009 | 11’26’’

“Old Fangs is set in a magnificent forest and tells the story of a young wolf who returns to the places of his childhood, a return both beautiful and difficult. He is accompanied by two friends, respectful and attentive companions on his journey. This is a film that makes you want to make films, and I can’t think of a nicer compliment.”

Claude Luyet

“ I chose this film for its immense poetry and for Tibet, but also, of course, to pay homage to the inimitable talent of Bernard Palacios to tell stories, whether it be a film, a book or simply over a glass with friends.”

Regina Pessoa
MY VILLAGE | MARK BAKER | Royaume- Uni | 1993 | 14’51’’

Mark Baker’s work typically features a deceptively simple, almost childlike hand-drawn visual style, but this conceals a far more sophisticated, adult-oriented view of the world. In a closed community fuelled by gossip and suspicion, one man dares to be different.

Gitanjali Rao
REFLEKSY | JERZY KUCIA | Pologne | 1979 | 6’24’’

“This is the first animated film I saw that made me want to choose animation as a field to follow when i was graduating from art school.”

Tatia Rosenthal
VIOLA | PRIIT TENDER | Estonie | 11’29’’ | 1999

“ Expandsfrom the fragility of individual parts to the uniting power of a love that starts with the ability to empathize with another person’s brokenness. A stunning, amusing, piece by Priit Tender, one of the most versatile, compelling animators working in Estonia today. ”

Marina Rosset

What are these two strange things above my nose I’m supposed to see with? They can’t be my eyes. No! They’d never have let me see such a thing. And yet there’s no denying it: I clearly see a knife in the fork compartment. A knife among the forks!

Georges Schwizgebel
SAUSAGE CITY | ADAM K. BECKET | 1974 | 5’

“Adam Becket was a very gifted director who graduated from CalArts (the California Institute of the Arts) and died untimely when his house burnt down in 1979. Sausage City was shown at the 1974 Zagreb festival and it made a very strong impression on me – it may actually explain my interest for drawing cycles.”
