Animatou a récemment été contacté pour participer à deux projets montés dans l’urgence en réaction à la folie guerrière que Vladimir Poutine a déchaîné sur l’Ukraine. Comme tous, nous sommes spectateurs, tout à la fois impuissants et directement concernés par ces évènements, et notre marge d’action est comme bien souvent très limitée au niveau individuel. Afin de contrer en partie cette frustration qui n’est pas nouvelle, nous vous donnons ci-dessous quelques informations sur ces deux projets auxquels nous nous sommes joints.
Nous n’oublions pas que d’autres guerres, qui nous semblent physiquement et géopolitiquement plus distantes, affectent depuis des années de très nombreuses populations civiles à travers le monde. Nous souhaitons faire ici honneur à l’espoir et au désir de paix que nourrissent les hommes et les femmes de Syrie, d’Irak, de Libye, du Yémen, du Myanmar, du Mali, de Colombie, du Soudan, d’Ethiopie, du Kurdistan, de Palestine – et de tant d’autres peuples de ce monde.
Début mars, un festival a été créé pour soutenir l’accueil les enfants réfugiés dans des camps à la frontière polonaise. Le Border-Crossing Children’s Film Festival (BCCFF Poland, ou Festival pour enfants trans-frontaliers) a ainsi sollicité de nombreux acteurs du monde de l’animation pour obtenir des films d’animation sans dialogues pour le très jeune public qui pourraient être diffusés libres de droits dans ce contexte très particulier.
Avec l’accord des réalisateurs genevois concernés, les films Animatou et Jeu ont ainsi été envoyés au BCCFF.
Nous avons également été contactés par une fan d’animation suisse-allemande qui nous a proposé de participer à la distribution de mini-courts métrages animés anti-guerre créés par des animateurs et artistes sonores russes. Ce projet, Russian Animation Artists Against the War, rassemble déjà plusieurs centaines de noms, dont certains seront vite reconnus par les fans d’animation. Liste s’allonge de jour en jour.
Les films, qui sont faits dans l’urgence et généralement sans moyens, durent quelques secondes chacun et sont rassemblés par compilation. Nous les relayons sur cette page et démarchons les cinémas de la région pour qu’ils soient aussi diffusés en début de séance.
Cette initiative aura sans aucun doute des conséquences bien réelles pour les hommes et femmes qui osent prendre position contre cette guerre et qui s’opposent donc ouvertement à la volonté de Vladimir Poutine. Ce dernier semble animé par un besoin grandissant de prouver qu’il n’a aucune limite dans sa pratique du pouvoir, et fait usage de tous les outils du parfait dictateur – de la propagande la plus abjecte à la violence d’Etat, en passant par le conflit armé et l’assassinat de journalistes et d’opposant.e.s, en Russie et à l’étranger.
Participer à ce projet n’est donc pas un geste symbolique pour ces artistes russes, mais constitue bien un acte de résistance et de répulsion envers un homme tout-puissant et son appareil d’Etat. Ces simples citoyen.ne.s assument les risques qu’ils prennent au nom de la paix et de la liberté d’expression.

Déclaration du 26 février
We strongly believe that a war can bear only death, pain and destruction, and there is no justification for a war. The community of Ukrainian and Russian animation filmmakers is united and inseparable, we have been working together, we have been watching each other’s films for many years. Animation Art is an art, which helps people to feel human. Not to kill, not to destroy. To connect.
Today we see our children, our brothers sent to kill those who they were recently playing in the same yard and watching the same cartoons, without distinguishing between Russian or Ukrainian ones.
Animation and art as a whole have always been radiating the spirit of antimilitarism. We believe that the current military action is targeting not only our Ukrainian friends and colleagues but are also aiming all people, humankind and the Human Being in general.
We are against the war. We do not want the words about our brother nation to turn into a bloodstained nightmare.
There is no justification for bombings and killing!
Déclaration du 2 mars
We believe peaceful methods are the only answer in resolving any conflicts between countries. Everything that is happening right now in Ukraine is a horrible tragedy. There is no way to justify this terror the war has brought to peaceful Ukrainian people on our behalf. We urge to stop all the military action against Ukraine immediately! We demand Peace! We demand respect for the territorial integrity of Ukraine! We demand respect for human life in every country of the world!

Texte de la pétition contre la guerre ‘Animators Against the Invasion of Ukraine‘
We are outraged, shocked, and fearful for the lives of Ukrainian people threatened by the unjust and unprovoked invasion that the Russian Federation launched on full-scale on February 24, 2022. In this letter, we express our complete solidarity and support for the Ukrainians fighting in defense of their families, homes, culture, self-governing, and fundamental human right to life. We condemn unlawful violence instigated by the brutal and destructive ideology of Vladimir Putin’s Russia and reject it as a manifestation of imperialism, chauvinism, and militarism. Stop war!
Some of us have experienced atrocities of war, some of us have to refer to images, texts, and memories of the preceding generations to start realizing what our friends, colleagues, loved ones go through now when taking shelter in underground stations and basements, lining up on the border control check-points with the neighbouring countries, covering windows with black sheets fearing the night air-strikes, holding their children and elders just to feel safe for a moment, … dying …
Our community cherishes imagination but we cannot think now of anything more than making these statements: make all efforts in calling for rigid and immediate sanctions on the rulers of the Russian Federation and the state system built on the ideology of Vladimir Putin. Demand from the governments to take a firm stand in support of the Ukrainian people in Ukraine, and the Ukrainian people taking refuge.
Don’t spread fake news. Don’t submit to Putin’s propaganda.
We love you deeply Ukrainian animators, cinematographers, music composers, editors, producers, distributors, festival organizers, film journalists and animation enthusiasts. We love your historical cinematic heritage, your brave visual imagination, the ironic sensitivity of your films. We deeply love the LINOLEUM International Contemporary Animation and Media Art Festival in Kyiv. Many of us remember how KROK International Animated Films Festival celebrated animation artists from Ukraine, Russia, and worldwide. We have memories of the 86 Festival of Film and Urbanism which, among other film forms, was bringing animation out to the citizens of Slavutych, the city built in order to move forward from pain and trauma. And we know that over 600 animators from Russia share all these feelings – of fear, pain, frustration, shame we have not done everything to help you before the bombs fell on your land, they said it explicitly in an open letter from February 25, 2022. We will all reunite in the studios, editing rooms, cinemas, galleries, festivals.
