L’un des objectifs principaux figurant dans les statuts de l’Association qui gère le Festival Animatou est de contribuer à la promotion du cinéma d’animation, et donc de faire vivre les films au-delà des projections qui ont lieu pendant le festival.
Ainsi, dans le but de faire découvrir les courts métrages d’animation au plus grand nombre, et en particulier à des publics qui ont peu accès au cinéma d’animation autre que celui des productions commerciales des grands studios, l’association Animatou a constitué au cours des dernières années une vidéothèque qui regroupe les films issus des sélections des précédentes éditions du festival et pour lesquels une autorisation expresse a été reçue de la part des ayants droit. La vidéothèque n’est ni en ligne ni accessible au public d’une quelconque autre manière; il s’agit d’une base de données de films qui peuvent être repris pour figurer dans divers programme spéciaux, constitués par l’équipe d’Animatou sur une thématique précise à la demande d’institutions (écoles, musées, bibliothèques, hôpitaux, parcs publics, maisons de quartier, prisons, etc…).
Il ne s’agit en aucun cas de développer une plateforme de distribution commerciale: les projections sont gratuites et proposées sur le territoire suisse, dans le cadre de structures culturelles ou sociales uniquement.
Chaque réalisateur ou ayant droit peut naturellement accepter ou refuser d’inscrire son film dans cette vidéothèque. En cas d’accord et si le film est programmé, les droits seront reversés régulièrement à l’ayant droit. L’accord est valable jusqu’à annonce de résiliation ou de modification par les ayant-droits.
Le montant des droits de passage peut bien entendu faire l’objet d’une négociation, de même que tout autre aspect de l’accord.

One of the main objectives of the Animatou Association is to contribute to the promotion of independent animation cinema and to give audiences of all social backgrounds access to films that do not originate from big studios and therefore do not benefit from large distribution networks. To that end, and with the purpose of extending the lifespan of animated shorts beyond their festivals career, a non-profit video library was created. If the copyright holders agree, films can then be included in off-festival screenings.
The Animatou video library is neither online nor accessible by the public in any other way. It is really just a film database constituting the bulk of the material used by the Animatou team to make up special programmes at the request of various institutions (such as schools, museums, libraries, hospitals, public parks, day care institutions, community centres, prisons, etc…).
We would like to point out that we do not aim to develop a commercial distribution plaform, as it is neither our vocation nor the level which we wish to operate at: Animatou’s thematic programmes are put together in collaboration with the requesting party and tailored to the age and background of the audience. The screenings are free of charge (barring very specific circumstances which are are discussed beforehand) and shown exclusively on Swiss territory, within the framework of cultural or social structures only.
Every director or copyright holder can naturally either accept or refuse the inclusion of the film in the Animatou video library. Should consent be given and a film be shown as part of a video library programme, due copyrights are paid on a regular basis. The agreement is valid until announced as formally revoked by the copyright holder.
This copyright fee can naturally be the subject of further negotiations, like any other point or aspect of the agreement.
