En Italie le cinéma d’animation a été trop longtemps considéré comme une version moderne de la fable, et donc destiné exclusivement au jeune public. Visible en salle surtout durant la période de Noël, il était considéré dans le meilleur des cas comme un outil éducatif. Malgré ce manque d’exposition, certains réalisateurs ont réussi à émerger et à être reconnus comme de véritables artistes d’avant-garde dans leur propre pays comme à l’étranger. Les chefs d’oeuvre qu’ils ont réalisés racontent de merveilleuses histoires dans lesquelles poésie et émotions s’entremêlent pour donner vie à des situations à la fois magiques et réelles, hors du temps et pourtant contemporaines, épiques tout en restant proches du quotidien, et souvent visionnaires et annonciatrices de changements sociaux à venir. L’Association Cultura Italia s’inspire particulièrement de problématiques sociales dans le choix des thématiques proposées dans le cadre de ses activités, et nous sommes donc très reconnaissants qu’Animatou ait choisi l’Italie comme pays d’honneur de l’édition 2017. Le Festival international du film d’animation de Genève offre une visibilité rare (bien que méritée) aux artistes de l’animation italienne, incitant les professionnels du cinéma italien, des producteurs aux distributeurs en passant par les institutions d’état, à investir davantage dans un genre cinématographique qui pourrait tout à fait prétendre à une dimension comparable à celle du cinéma dit «classique». Nous souhaitons également exprimer notre gratitude aux Cinémas du Grütli, notre partenaire historique dans la promotion du grand cinema italien.
In Italy, animation cinema has long been considered a modern version of the fable, and as such, intended only for children. Shown cinemas in during Christmas time, animated films were considered at best as educational tools. Despite such a lack of exposure, a number of directors managed to emerge and become recognized as true avant-garde artists in Italy and abroad. Their masterpiece works tell marvellous stories where poetry and emotion give shape to tales that are both magic and real; outside of time, yet contemporary; epics that stay near to daily life; and visionary films that are heralds of social changes to come. The Cultura Italia Association is particularly interested in social problems, reflected through its focused themes and activities, and we are thus very grateful that Animatou chose Italy as its country of honor for the 2017 Festival. Geneva’s International Animation Film Festival gives a rare, and much deserved, exposure to Italian animation artists, encouraging professionals in the Italian film industry – from producers to distributors and government institutions – to invest more in Italian animated film, allowing it to gain equal footing with «classic» Italian cinema.
